September 2, 2024, Uzice - The city of Užice has successfully implemented the project of reconstruction, rationalization and maintenance of public lighting, using the public-private partnership (PPP) model. Before the implementation of the project, the annual costs of the City of Užice for public lighting, including electricity consumption and maintenance, amounted to about 900 thousand euros.
By implementing the project, the City of Užice will realize annual savings of at least 205,000 euros, which will result in total savings of more than 3 million euros over a period of 15 years. The project brings a significant reduction in electricity consumption, from 5.1 million kWh to the projected 950 thousand kWh, which represents a saving of as much as 82%. It also contributes to the reduction of CO emissions2 for more than 70 thousand tons during the duration of the contract.
The project is fully in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations, primarily through a significant reduction in energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
If this project had not been implemented, it is estimated that the costs of the city in the next 15 years would be higher than 15 million euros, with a possible additional increase of 30-50% due to the increase in electricity prices.
The new equipment, which includes around 10,000 lights and reflectors and 250 on/off systems, is expected to last 25 years, which is almost twice the duration of the contract. The equipment was handed over to the City of Užice immediately after installation, without any additional costs for the City of Užice.
Through this project, the City of Užice provided a sustainable way of financing the modernization of public lighting without new financial burdens. Already, the city is making significant savings, which can be redirected to other development projects. The project was realized in cooperation with private partners, the companies Interenergo and Smart Energy Investment, which improved the public lighting system, which resulted in significant savings and improvement of lighting quality.
This public-private partnership project is an example of successful cooperation that brings benefits to all users and significantly contributes to improving the quality of life in Užice.
